Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

This book was hard to get into, the social groups and new words were all a little confusing. Plus, books with several POV's are always hit or miss. I finally got in, when Enan showed his special ability.
I liked that they all had their own character voice, though Enan seems pretty unbelievable to me. But all in all, It's different and fun to read, with characters that grow on you in the end.
