One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Among them is a Wall Street wunderkind, a young woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy, an injured vet returning from Afghanistan, a septuagenarian business tycoon, and a free-spirited woman running away from her controlling husband. when the first chapter opens in an airport lounge and introduces over a dozen characters, you know it's not going to end well. thankfully, the author doesn't keep you hanging too long and the second chapter opens with the wreckage. there's one survivor and we alternate between the hours and minutes before the crash, and the continuation of life for the 12 yo boy that loses his whole family.

it felt a little John-Green-Does-An-Airplane-Crash. the ending was protracted, with too many codas, and ultimately too pie-in-sky for my tastes. as usual, i've forgotten why this novel was on my TBR list; lots of people are swooning over it and it was simply... fine.
