San Francisco, 1876: a stifling heat wave and smallpox epidemic have engulfed the city. Deep in the streets of Chinatown live three former stars of the Parisian circus: Blanche, now an exotic dancer at the House of Mirrors, her lover Arthur and his companion Ernest. When an eccentric outsider joins their little circle, secrets unravel, changing everything and leaving one of them dead.

everything i'd hoped it would be.
the distancing that the child provided (not knowing to be horrified) made the book much easier to consume.  and the grandmother character was spot-on: confident in parenting, no-nonsense advice/reactions, while allowing for natural boundaries.  she reminded me of my own mom with my children.  believable and effective as a character.
other than that, i was left with a deep curiosity about the real life experiences of jaycee dugard and elisabeth fritz.
