In THE TRAGEDY OF BIRLSTONE, Holmes receives a coded message, from Porlock, 'the weak link in a chain leading to the controlling brain of the underworld' - Professor Moriarty. Holmes and Watson decipher the message as indicating that a man named Douglas, residing at Birlstone, is in danger.
