Jigme Datse reviewed Saturn's Children by Charles Stross
Easy read with terrible topics...
2 stars
Content warning rape, slavery, mass extinction
Not sure how things work, so I'm writing this, hopefully behind a spoiler wall. I don't really want to go into the huge details about the book, but there is a lot of "casual rape". It starts fairly early with a scene where the spaceship rapes the main character (non-consensual sexual act involving penetration).
There also is a whole lot of mention of the way that most people (officially all biological life is extinct so there is that) are either actual slaves, or they are wage slaves.
The writing is actually quite compelling. It was hard to "give up on" despite the fact so much of what was in it was terrible, and mostly not well addressed terrible. It wasn't really "this is good, and the way it should be," but more "this is the way it is, and there's nothing that can really be done about it".
The ending was satisfying enough that I sort of want to read more of it. But the book did literally give me nightmares, so I can't really say that I actually want to read more of the series. Or honestly the author.
