Generic book about UFOs
When his books had Paul J. Mcauley on the cover, he wrote some great SF novels and short stories. Now the J has been dropped, he writes action or disaster stories that are fairly boring. This is the second book of his that I got too bored to finish.
The planet has been ravaged by a nuclear war with huge numbers of refugees, and aliens in the style of 1950s UFOs have visited and given humans planets and technology. However, much like the premise of the War of the Worlds TV series, technology and civilization are completely unchanged, and most people have failed to notice, which seems unlikely.
Perhaps this would have worked better as a short story.
