A fascinating first novel, with a strong sense of place and of consequences. Peoples actions matter to other people in ways that seem real, and allows the minor characters to appear less like pawns and have their own motivations and concerns. Though billed as a murder mystery, the unusual setting and scale of the eventual plot overshadow that to some extent, but not in any harmful way. Will be interesting to observe Acatl as he develops in subsequent books.
