Nigel Strangeways is staying as a guest in the village of Maiden Astbury to address their local literary society. Just before he arrived, the dog of a much disliked brewery owner had been found drowned in a brewery vat. Shortly after Nigel's arrival a human body is found in one of the vats, having been boiled down to the bone - so begins his investigation.
