Father Greeley's fictional detective, the Most Reverend John Blackwood Ryan, auxiliary bishop of Chicago and amateur sleuth par excellence, becomes involved in another mystery with both theological implications and romantic complications.

Vacationing in Dublin with his niece and youngest sister, Blackie joins forces with fellow Chicagoan Captain Timothy Patrick MacCarthy in an attempt to solve the baffling murder of Irish millionaire James Lark MacDonaugh. Recruited by MacDonaugh's disgruntled and disinherited family and business associates to investigate the cleverly executed homicide, Tim finds himself irresistibly drawn to his prime suspect, the grieving widow.
