many of us are already into repairing what we have, not only to save money, but because we care about what we own.

many more people are interested in repairing what they have, but don't really know where to start.

i really enjoyed this mini-doc on repair in japan. it highlights many different kinds of tinkerers and artisans, from electronics to umbrellas to kintsugi:

if you're new to repairing things, there are an overwhelming number of places to start, and it will appear impossible on your first go. i've been taking apart things since i was 3 years old, and can safely say: you will break more than you fix, and eventually learn how to fix what you break! but the real joy is in the learning process of understanding how it all works.

I'm in my late 30s and a writer of and .
I'm attempting to become a better artist also, in order to own my work process end to end ....We'll see if I can get there, lol.

I love , cozy socks (but forever losing those, alas!), , Mary Oliver the legendary poet, delight, wonder, witchiness, magic, and mystical meaning. Taylor Swift …

Ok, I need to think about different things.

Are there folks out there who can explain to me the difference between and - both in the genres and the tag use in the fedi. Plus any other defiantly optimistic tags and ideas going on out there. (I for one am delighted by )

I am unlikely to have the cog to engage but will be lurking and pondering.

Invitation to infodumps and tangents.

I wanna explore this space, listen and dream.

A couple folks have brought up a great concern regarding "Free Fridges" and Post-Scarcity Mutual Aid Food Distribution:

(I will not link the specific threads here as to discourage brigading).

Example concern: "It's funny how few of these projects last. I am an old school liberal where we recognize that intentions are not enough. Stuff has gotta work, and that leaves out a lot of hope-cope stuff like free stuff."

Example concern: Post-scarcity programs have been tried over & over. They run into the same issues. 80% decent folk vs 20% selfish sociopaths. [...] Free food outlets get vandalized by NIMBY's to "discourage the wrong sort. Volunteers burn-out & tire of those misusing facilities meant for the common good"

The general concern is that these initiatives "fail." And that the existence of this fail state is enough to discourage even attempting it in the first place.

A couple thoughts:

1) …

Someone dropped off a massive food rescue haul to our free fridge and community pantry today.

They're not part of my program and we're not sure who's doing it. This is awesome. It means there are others outside of our volunteer group that does maintenance on the fridges and outside of the group that I'm working with to build out our formal food rescue program.

This is huge.

This means we have successfully built post-scarcity *infrastructure*!!!

Folks are using our fridges both to contribute and to utilize. Folks that have nothing to do directly with the core group of maintainers. Wow.

We need to build more free fridges. This one is running out of room.

The political world is larger than voting.

A couple political parties cannot encompass all of political thought.

"Just Vote" is scratching an infected itch. (Sure, do it, but dont rely on it)

A world opens up to you when you meet with your neighbors and build things in your town. You realize just how constrained and limited the options that you are presented with are.

This is by design.

You are meant to stare into a little room, be frustrated with the limited options, find none of them work, and then lament on "I want to do something, but can't!"

There are options.

There is much you can do.

Even with limited time, no money, no (perceived) skills, and no (perceived) ability.

Go see your neighbor. Go build in your town. You will succeed.

In Canada, 16-42 million birds are killed by window strikes a year, and in the USA, that number goes up to 365 million-1 billion.

By adding designs that don't have any gaps wider than 2," you can make any window bird-safe. Decals, engravings, and even glass paint, are all options. There are many design options to pick from.

Been 5 years I haven't had a mains line for electricity. Living off the sun in a location where it is cloudy most of the year is feasible if you can turn off power hungry devices when not needed or when it's been very overcast. This has become a habit now and I have no regrets.

Grateful for this exercise in being always aware of my power demands and what my environment can afford me.
