Okay, friends, at the recommendation of Cory Doctorow, I just installed libro.fm on my iPhone so I can listen to audiobooks again. I’ve been boycotting Audible for years because of their DRM policy, so this is exciting!

And it made me wonder if there is a similarly enlightened book reader app on iOS. Any suggestions?

Help !

I am trying to remember a book I read in late 90s or early 00s.

Probably YA fantasy. There was a girl who traveled thru a fae circle. I believe it had something to do with a solstice or equinox. There were wolves with magical (golden?) eyes who iirc she could speak to. I want to say it was present day at the time before she was transported.

Does this ring familiar for anyone?

You can’t ask a dead man who pulled the trigger. ‘A Tangled Web’ is a fast-paced contemporary thriller set in northern Scotland.

The fictional Sarclet Castle on the east coast of Caithness south of Wick is visited by two of the characters as the story builds towards its climax. Sarclet Castle is partly based on the Castle of Mey, shown in this image, with some internal elements borrowed from Eilean Donan Castle.

(more accurately, was reading, since I just finished) Helle and Death, a nod to the classic British country house whodunnit with a charming Danish lead — thoroughly enjoyed it, and there’s a sequel out in a few weeks I’ll be sure to get hold of.

(It’s one of those books with a startlingly low rating on Goodreads, I wonder if people were expecting Scandi Noir, or didn’t like the denouement, or who knows. I adored it, YMMV!)

When the past comes back to haunt you. ‘The Danger of Life’ is a fast-paced thriller set in Scotland during World War Two. It uses many real settings, transported eight decades back in time.

The manhunt at the heart of the story throws up relics of a conflict that took place two centuries earlier, a conflict commemorated by the Glenfinnan Monument, located not far from the scene of much of the action in the book.
