2025 marks the 100th birthday of the National Library of Scotland as it currently is – a public resource tasked with preserving the literary heritage of a nation. However, the Library’s story did not begin in 1925. Robbie Mitchell & Ralph McLean explore the five centuries of history that made the Library what it is today.

Today I happened to be at the memorial to the . I overheard something interesting from the guide of some tour group. The window to the empty has two reasons: 1. the should not be replaced, the library should not be replenished. The shelves remain empty. What has happened cannot be undone, at most it can be prevented from happening again. 2. everyone should be able to see their own reflection when looking into the empty room - what would I have done?
