The trouble with ambitious #photography projects is they can become a bit like a curse. This is an image I’ve tried to capture 4 times across 3 years, and this – the second version – is still the best.

#astrophotography in some of the darkest skies on earth under #tasmania ‘s imposing Russell Falls in heavy flow was a hard thing to pull off. The window this shot works is only about an hour a night for a few weeks a year, and it’s rarely not cloudy.

The scene is focused on the full flow of Russell Falls, rimmed by prehistoric ferns and subalpine rainforest. The foreground has intense flow running over rocks, with significant spray from the falling water. In the canopy, the galactic core of the Milky Way sets behind the zenith of the falls.

Echidnas are everywhere are the moment. This one's visited a few times to clean up the ants around an old retaining wall.

The echidnas are very busy at the moment. I saw three yesterday and two today. Some are quite timid and curl up every time the camera's shutter goes off and others don't care at all.

When threatened echidnas don't attack but, instead, they quickly roll up and dig their legs into the ground, protected all over by the sharp spines. If you touch the echidna its whole body jerks and it stabs you in the finger. Guess how I know?

Friday was the most amazing aurora in Tasmania that I could see from my back garden.

Heres a bit more info about the storms and their aftermath in Tasmania. My experience was not unusual, some people in our community are still waiting for their power to be restored. The intensity of the storm is a sign of #climateChange #tasmania
