Nope, nope, nope. I hated every minute of this. It would have been DNF but so many reviewers enjoyed it I wanted to give it a chance. There wasn't a single character who wasn't infuriating, the parents were just... simplistic caricatures, the only character of colour was painted as an unreasonable villain for not going along with the ridiculous web of lies that Kate and Chuck had created by not having an ounce of self preservation. They were selfish and beyond immature and I don't understand how we were meant to root for them.

Possibly a little dated at this point (12 years after publishing), but the general ideas were helpful and a great beginning point to further research.

Okay, so I did not like Mel for most of the book. She came off as frustratingly self-centered and flakey, but the story was entertaining and I liked the whiplash of "can I trust this person or not" that kept coming up. It was relatable and well written I think.

Somehow, despite the absurd coincidences, this really worked. Probably because that was the whole point.
