A Maze of Death is a 1970 science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick. Like many of Dick's novels, it portrays what appears to be a drab and harsh off-world human colony and explores the difference between reality and perception. It is, however, one of his few to examine the human death instinct and capacity for murder and is one of his darkest novels.

Amazing. Possibly one of Dick's best works, but not for the faint hearted.

14 self centered, egocentric individuals find themselves stranded on a new colony, and are dependant on themselves and each other for survival. One by one, people die, but why is unclear.

Dick builds a solid religion consisting of a blend of different religious systems that feels solid and adopted by the members of the community. The idea that prayers are not just abstract constructs, but messages that can and are answered gives a certainty to the settlers beliefs.

The progression of the story is almost that of an Agatha Christie murder mystery. It's refreshing, dark, and pacey. Reserve a block of time and read it end to end, it's a compelling page-turner.

Fantastic.
