the best and most surprising thing about this slim book is finding out about the massive fires that swept thru northern Ontario back in the 1920s. and it's ironic that a French author (the book is a translation) was the first to write about them.
it starts with a chapter narrated by an aging photographer stumbling upon a group of men living in the forest. the next chapter picks up from one of the men's perspectives and so on. I liked that. but, as death was an ever present element in the story, it was a bleak read for me
