A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies. Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive. How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place?

As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?

From multi-award-winning Patrick Ness comes one of the most provocative and moving novels of our time.

It's frustrating that there are no answers. It's masquerading as a metaphor and seems more like the author couldn't think of a plausible way to explain the intricacies of the plot he'd created. Plus, the formula is exactly the same as every other Ness book I've read. Poor white boy suffers then becomes a man after lots of plot twists. Like other Ness books, this is a gateway drug into reading proper length novels and is probably very appealing to teenage readers.
