4 stars

Normally, anything Brookmyre is read straight away. I had sat on this for a while because of my dislike of retrograde settings. Luckily, this addressed the issues I have with those. Edinburgh was good and dirty, life was short and brutish if you were poor and illness or injury was serious business. This was engaging, readable and enjoyable. A solid 4 even if the main 'whodunnit' was a little formulaic. Recommended.
