The first book in the young adult fantasy series, Outcast.

As with [b:Sabriel|518848|Sabriel (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #1)|Garth Nix|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1266575294s/518848.jpg|3312237] I found this offering a little too young and childish to utterly enjoy it. Sniegoski has done it before ([b:sleepper code] wasn't much good without [b:sleeper agenda|66397|Sleeper Agenda|Thomas E. Sniegoski|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170651182s/66397.jpg|64382], for instance). Nevertheless I felt little for the writing or the characters and the world comes over as just a little flat.
