A delightful tale that feels very much of its time, although it does insist that girls want to explore and have adventures, too, which it has in common with many a contemporary children's fantasy story.
A thing that is much more unusual these days is a framing story, which initially, I could not see the point of - but Norton knew what she was doing! Not only does the frame end up being useful to heighten the dramatic tension but it allows the author to maintain the ambiguity about what really is really happening...
There are sequels - I plan to read them.
