Twelve-year-old Mosca Mye hasn't got much. Her cruel uncle keeps her locked up in his mill, and her only friend is her pet goose, Saracen, who'll bite anything that crosses his path. But she does have one small, rare thing: the ability to read. She doesn't know it yet, but in a world where books are dangerous things, this gift will change her life.

An exceptional book. The authors love of language is manifest everywhere, in the way the book is written and in the subject matter itself. The main character, Mosca, and her goose Saracen, are engaging characters, as are the supporting cast. I read the book with a constant grin on my face, especially during the river chase towards the end, the most wonderful pastiche of all chase scenes, but at a sedate pace. Despite the glee, the subject matter is not frivolous, meditating on the freedom of people to make their own life choices (good and bad) on faith, destiny and government. Absolutely you should read this now.
