The way this started out, I thought I’d stumbled on a middle grade book by accident, but the character growth and complexity in this novel are incredibly satisfying. It’s smart and witty and yet full of dangerous wines and hallucinogenic cheeses in an underground community of magical artisans choked by deadly political intrigue.
