Review of 'Cuckoo Song [Paperback] [Jan 01, 2012] Frances Hardinge' on 'Goodreads'
5 stars
Another engaging book from Frances Hardinge, dealing with (among many other things) loss and second chances in post WWI Britain This is darker, more unsettling, than her previous works, yet the darkness has a purpose, it isn't a gratuitous layer added for cheap effect. The people and beings Triss encounters as she strives to avoid an awful fate, all feel real with their own motivations and concerns. No caricatures or cardboard cut out villains stalk these pages, it's a well rounded cast. Her trademark invention and imagination are still present, subtly underpinning the tale with superb creatures, descriptions and events. Thoroughly recommended.
