The Magyk Begins HereSeptimus Heap, the seventh son of the seventh son, disappears the night he is born, pronounced dead by the midwife. That same night, the baby's father, Silas Heap, comes across an abandoned child in the snow -- a newborn girl with violet eyes. Magyk is a very gentle-hearted fantasy, despite having a nefarious necromancer for a villian. It also displays a quite gentle humour, with many characters displaying endearingly petty personality traits and concerns. The central mystery is not very mysterious, as its solution is eminently guessable, but it doesn't seem to matter as the quirky Magyk of the title and the puns and characters keep one amused through-out.
An oddity of the book is a kind of appendix that explains what happened after the main action is over, to every character, how-ever minor...except for two...one of whom, at least is guaranteed to turn up in the sequel.
