Review of 'Space Opera' on 'Goodreads'

Even if you neglected to read the blurb, it's very obvious within a few pages that the author is a massive fan of Douglas Adams and is inspired (to put it mildly) by his works. Exhibit A: the Paradox Box which visits every point simultaneously - Infinite Improbability Drive anyone?

Unfortunately, it doesn't quite land for me. One of the reasons H2G2 is so funny is because a lot of the seemingly surreal situations are satirical and relatable - particularly the obstructive and bureaucratic local authority trying to knock down Dent's house. That isn't the case in this book - it's surreal for the sake of it.

That's not to say the book is bad - on its own it stands up okay. But it's trying so hard to follow in another author's footsteps that it invariably invites comparisons, and stumbles as a result.
