A Streetcar Named Desire is a play written by Tennessee Williams and first performed on Broadway on December 3, 1947. The play dramatizes the experiences of Blanche DuBois, a former Southern belle who, after encountering a series of personal losses, leaves her once-prosperous situation to move into a shabby apartment in New Orleans rented by her younger sister and brother-in-law. Williams' most popular work, A Streetcar Named Desire is one of the most critically acclaimed plays of the twentieth century. It still ranks among his most performed plays, and has inspired many adaptations in other forms, notably a critically acclaimed film that was released in 1951.

Half way and I'm thinking, "This isn't as good as the other two of his plays I'm acquainted with," then, within a few pages it takes a turn for the more - dramatic! Then it becomes more brutal and more affecting and more gripping - I raced through the remainder. It's a grim story with Mitch the only significant character who comes out of it looking at all decent. The others are morbidly fascinating and superbly written.
