The Resisters

There are some books I can't finish because I'm distracted by the prose, constantly thinking I would have chosen different words (my unexplored career as annoying editor). On the opposite end of the spectrum, this book is an example where I frequently pause to admire a beautiful, inventive, or just right phrase. None of it is distracting or intimidating, it just flows almost cheerfully, reminding me a bit of an Anne Tyler novel. That is, if Anne Tyler wrote about non-white people outside Baltimore in an Orwellian dystopia by way of Facebook. With baseball.
