#QuakerPunk - rough draft of a proposed starting definition (based on discussions with #Quakers & help from the internet):
"Quakerpunk is a #SpiritualHumanist movement which embraces #LiberationTheology & the #SolarPunk ethos; our testimonies are sometimes called the #QuakerSpices (Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship of the Earth)."
Urban #solarpunk apartment dwellers: I see 100s of recommendations for things you can do if you have land or live in a whole house. Many of us are not on the ground floor. What are some of your urban apartment living solarpunk hacks?
Mine is not having a fridge and having a zeer pot on the balcony instead
I first encountered #VandanaSingh in Dozois' Year's Best collections (which I SO miss). A physics & environment professor, she writes deeply poetic speculative - sometimes science, but not only - fiction, often rooted in Indian mythology.
My favorite in this collection is "Indra's Web" is somewhat different: pure #hopepunk & #solarpunk: something small that will ripple around the world and feels truly reachable already today. Read it on a dark day. Hope.
Perhaps the most ambitious car-free scheme in North America, Montréal has pedestrianized 11 commercial arteries—totalling 9.4 kilometres—in seven boroughs this summer. A pandemic-era initiative pushed by chambers of commerce, they have quickly become cherished destinations for locals and tourists alike.
Montréal City Hall invested $12-million between 2022 and 2024 to open the streets in front of 2,100 local businesses: “The boroughs, business owners, residents, customers, passers-by, and tourists appreciate the quality of life offered by pedestrianization projects.” - Mayor Valérie Plante.
Ultimately, these car-free streets are built on the recognition that shopping districts can either attract cars or people. They can’t successfully do both. And in an age of online retail, these brick-and-mortar businesses realize that they really can’t compete on expedience—so they must compete on experience.
Tashan was an absolutely delightful guest on the pod, and we got deep into how the structure of our stories limits what kinds of stories we can tell... and how climate storytelling will need to break those bounds to imagine sustainable ways to be in the world. https://brightgreenfutures.substack.com/p/ep-16-the-shapes-of-stories-with

My very talented friend Renan Bernardo has a solarpunk graphic novel up on backerkit (via Android Press), and I highly recommend you check it out!
"Janet and her outdated android friend Lyria live in the post-fossil fuel city of Sundyal in this story about accepting loss and the importance of ensuring utopia is accessible to everyone."
There are new transparent solar panels that convert only the frequencies of light that plants don't use and let the one they do use through, so you get electricity from your greenhouses!
The pink panels behind Farmer Dave visible in this video are prototypes he's trialing for, uh, UC Santa Cruz? I forget. He talks about them in another video, I'm looking for it...
I may have just discovered why some condescendingly dismiss new bike lanes bc they feel confident assuming "you wouldn't even use them." 😡 Like wtf, if you knew me, I illegally 🚨 🚓 bike on sidewalks to avoid cars
Do these pick-me vehicular cyclists realize that no amount of ingratiating BS will keep a multi ton vehicle from flattening you and your bike bc you called it a "vehicle"? WTF is this insanity??
There was a jam that got designers creating games that might be included in the book, and I didn't win any of the jam prizes, but then my submission is one of just two games that got picked for the book alongside the academic articles.
It's called How To Ooze Charm In the Future. Check it out.
Woot it finally came in! #solarpunk#witchcraft#activism#hopepunk#radicalaction Initial scan : Footnotes! Excellent primer for baby witchlings! Advanced working too! Specific actions both mundane & magical to snowball a grassroots movement for a respectful, regenerative & resilient future. #utopianwitch
So my local library's makerspace offered a free event where they brought in a bunch of old tower computers, printers, game consoles, etc., - laid out a bunch of iFixit toolkits - and let everyone (kids and adults alike) take everything apart!!!
One kid was hesitant because they didn't want to break anything and the library staff were like, none of it works. We're recycling and throwing everything out afterwards! Go hog wild, you won't get in trouble! You're meant to break it and take it apart!
The kid was absolutely enthusiastic and went to town!
I got to be a kid again and go into detail about all the computer parts and what each of the hardware did. It was awesome watching my children and other kids and adults interact, share tools, show off what they found.

I spoke with the organizer afterwards and asked if this was a regular thing and he said that he didn't have enough old equipment to make it regular. I laughed and said all of my friends have CLOSETS FULL OF THIS STUFF and the idea of giving it to a bunch of kids and adults to play with would bring joy and meaning to their life, lol!
I gave him the time to meet up with @fxbghackers and told him to make a community announcement about needing old electronics for donation to take apart and he'd get truck loads.
Just another way community helps each other out. This is post scarcity education.
