Somewhat hard going overall, the author, either deliberately, or by omission, failed to explain much of anything. On one hand this meant that you did get a good sense of observing a strange world, on the other hand it was easy to glaze over and wonder what on earth was happening. It started to make sense in the second half but by then the main characters had transformed from confused bystanders into major players without any difficulty.
