This... was a slog. I really enjoy Bank's books in general, but found myself finding other things to do, rather than to continue reading this. It dragged in a lot of places, and lacked the entertaining world-building that makes the culture novels so engaging. There were some bright spots in action or interesting concepts, but a lot of the ideas didn't really go anywhere.

A tantalising intro to a new series
4 stars
Having enjoyed Kloos' last outing (The Frontline Series), I picked this up expecting a similar experience. The structure is different, but not unpleasantly so, working with multiple POV characters, instead of the single-stream POV of the previous series.
The book itself (well, audiobook) flew past, drawing me into the universe and doing a nice job of letting you get to know the characters.
The content is balanced nicely between action and character beats, and paced so that I never felt it dragged.
Definitely hooked me, and I'm diving into the next one.
