Complex story about characters in Norse mythology

4 stars

I'd never heard of the witch Angrboda in Norse mythology, but had heard of Odin, Loki, and Ragnarok (I'll admit my knowledge of these things is in large part because of Marvel movies). This book is a wonderful exploration of mythological characters in that world, and it's one of the books I enjoyed the most in 2022. The author creates a lived in world with complicated and flawed characters, while still following stories in real mythology (I only know that because I looked up the actual myths after I finished the book). This is an enjoyable book for anyone interested in myths and ancient stories, and you don't need to know anything about the characters or stories to enjoy it.

Natalie Zina Walschots: Hench (Hardcover, 2020, William Morrow) 4 stars

Enjoyable alternate take on the superhero/villain genre

4 stars

I'll admit I'm totally burned out on superhero media. For a while, it seemed like every week a new movie or TV show came out featuring Marvel or DC comic book heroes, and a lot of them recently have been really bad (I'm still irritated Doctor Strange was so disjointed). At any rate, this book was a fun change to the standard superhero fare out there. This book is a tale of what happens to all of the innocent bystanders when superheroes go on a rampage to save someone or something, and also describes the underworld of temp agencies that support villains in jobs like data management and tech support. The main character works as a temp office worker for a minor villain, but when a trivial job "in the field" goes terribly wrong, her life is changed forever and she starts down a path working for one of the …

My favorite book of 2022

5 stars

Babel was my favorite book in 2022. It's technically a fantasy, because it's both alternate history in a world with magic, but it touches on so many real-world issues that it's an unusual fantasy. Babel takes places in the early 1800s and an elite group of translators can use silver bars to create magical enchantments that do all sorts of things: heal illness, help with construction projects, and so much more. The translators are trained at a special college at Oxford called the Babel (after the Tower of Babel). The story focuses on four students who are studying at the prestigious school. One young man is from China and one from India. The other two students are women, one from Haiti and one from England. Woven throughout the story of why they were chosen to study at Babel and what their experiences are like are issues of colonialism, racism, misogyny, …

First favorite book of 2023

5 stars

It's hard to find books with unique approaches to fantasy, so I'm always excited to find a story that's truly original. This is one of them. The story is about a subspecies of humans (maybe?) who eat books instead of food, and they absorb the information in books they eat. Their society reminded me of an extreme evangelical religious cult run by the men. The story is about a young woman who tries to escape the crushing patriarchal society to save her son. I found the characters well developed and the story compelling. There are elements of suspense and mystery, trying to figure out what will happen next and who the main character can really trust. I blew through the book in a couple days. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
