The final issue landed today and I just finished it. This whole series was a blast. Whilst the series was delivered under DC's young adult imprint, this did not annoy me as it normally would.
A city in space with 3 distinct races who, given their history, have decided to ban emotion. Into the mix throw a human Green Lantern and see what happens. That's the elevator pitch but does little justice to what NK Jemisin and Jamal Campbell achieved here. There was a lot packed into this and it had breadth and heft with some rather though provoking ideas.
Right off the bat, NK Jemisin shows a mastery of the comics form. The pacing is spot on and she gives room for the artist to tell the story. Further, DC made the wise decision of sticking with the artist when things fell behind. I always feel comics are better for one artistic voice, something that I accept is logistically difficult to achieve.
This had a light tone, despite the weighty ideas being explored and there was always a little lighter moment (comedy, romance etc) when the story needed it.
I also give high praise for the decision to keep it a limited series.
Highly recommended.
