I struggled a bit with this one. As you can see it took me over a month to finish. Partly due to distraction by other things but I suspect largely because it started out with characters I found difficult to relate to. Oddly enough, the men. Once the ladies came to the fore this book came into its own. This is a magic realism homage to New York (in the author's own words). It's about these places and the people who live in them and their impact on the multiverse at large. I am not going to spoil the antagonist, as that made me laugh out loud during the reveal. However, suffice to say, cities have consequences.
NK Jemisin is a major talent (you don't hat trick the Hugo's by accident). I recall a favourable reading the Inheritance trilogy a while back and her current turn in comics (Far Sector) is an absolute treat. That talent is very much on display here with some really sharp writing. Even with my initial struggles this has ended up with 4 stars and a recommend. I can see myself continuing with the series.
