another 'old man nearing the end of his life and rejecting/reflecting' book, except he's trying to end it, and he's a curmudgeon. but a dutiful one, so he has to postpone his plans time and again to aid his pregnant neighbor or his old friend's wife or who ever until he has rebuilt a community and tah-dah: happy ending. meh.
