Kay Dick: They (1977, Allen Lane) 3 stars

This is Britain: but not as we know it.

THEY begin with a dead dog, …

This month's book club pick.

This book felt like a nightmare. A little bit like The Trial, with characters appearing from nowhere and not really acting like people. Some really horrible things happen without explanation.

There were a handful of scenes that I thought were very effective, but I'm not sure the book came together in a coherent whole. Each chapter doesn't really tie to the last and nothing seems to go anywhere.

I think there are similar ideas in I Who Have Never Known Men, and I thought that worked a lot better for me.

There's every chance I'm missing a lot here, the book is vague. I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks.
