Douglas Stuart: Young Mungo (2022, Grove/Atlantic, Incorporated) 5 stars

A moving and powerful read

5 stars

I went in not knowing anything about this book and expecting a fairly light coming-of-age romance book. That is not what this is, but I was far from disappointed.

A moving and powerful read that really explores themes that I recognise growing up in Scotland in the 90s / early 00s (although nothing remotely like the events of the book). It's an emotional look back at a very recent past, but also shows how far we've come.

Highly recommend this book. One of the highlights of my 2024 reading year. I'm excited to read Douglas Stuart's first novel.

Gripping Read

5 stars

This was recommended to me and I went in knowing very little about it.

I found it to be a really gripping novel; hard to put down. I was really excited to see how the characters lives intersected and how they handled the trauma of the devastating pandemic.

The book tells the story of the characters at various stages of their lives ranging from many years before the pandemic, to around 20 years after. This gives a really interesting perspective on the characters, and keeps the pace of the book fast and interesting.

Highly recommended!

Eventually Enjoyable

4 stars

This was a slow start for me, perhaps because I didn’t initially grasp what the book was doing. As it progressed it all clicked and I loved it.

It's quite a moving story about people, first impressions, assumptions, and the impact we have on each other.
