Some really strong, original short horror stories that play cleverly with race, identity, displacement, hate and self-hate. But it's mostly a mixed bag.

I did love and would highly recommend the stories by Rebecca Roanhorse, Lesley Nneka Arimah and Chesya Burke – skip straight to these.

The foreword tells me that Hogg preferred to write only one draft. It shows. Confessions does lots of Gothic stuff well enough, but apart from its Borders setting, it's not treading any ground that Lewis's The Monk hasn't already.
