gripping thriller with an ambiguous ending which means you just have to move straight on to the next one in the series

I recently read Mermaids Singing, the first in this book series. It was well written but it featured a transphobic trope which just wouldn't be acceptable these days. But I liked the main characters, so I've read the second in the series and it was not at all problematic in the same way.
