Slow start but good ending

I read this for a book group. If it hadn't been for a group I might have given up partway through, because it took a long time to get going, but there were some big twists towards the end and the story and characters have been going round in my head since.

I recently read Mermaids Singing, the first in this book series. It was well written but it featured a transphobic trope which just wouldn't be acceptable these days. But I liked the main characters, so I've read the second in the series and it was not at all problematic in the same way.
