Alisa Lynn Valdés: Hollow Beasts (2023, Amazon Publishing) 3 stars

Didn't get too far into the story, only about 3 chapters in. What I read was well written for the most part but there were signs that I may eventually not be happy reading it so I DNF'd it earlier rather than later. I got the book free through Amazon's Prime picks so didn't pay for the book.

There were a couple of potential red flags that I noticed early on that made me second guess whether or not I wanted to read the story. First I noticed that it was part one of two and had just about 300 pages, many books easily have 600 pages so my guess is that the "free book" is really just the first half of an actually ~600 pg. book and may not have not definitive conclusion.

The book started out with a typical cold open that felt a little too disconnected, but I know in an age where everyone is competing for an ever dwindling attention span, opinions may vary.

The books subject matter deals with the political polarization of the US especially in regards to it's indigenous population as well as a growing right wing extremists groups. The author, who is well educated on the subject, took a more kid's gloves approach to the subject (at least in the first 3 chapters). Which isn't something that I'm looking for. Personally that's a topic that I read regularly in nonfiction genera, either historical, political, or as current events and for personal recreation I wanted something lighter for my fictional reading. Though I will say I haven't gotten really far enough in the book to see how much it would eventually affect the story.

There was a chapter written about "Influencers" in full dialect which is just a big no for me. As someone who watches many videos on Youtube for hobbyists and educational ones as well, I'm not against Influencers as a whole (though definitely some individually) but it seems every generation some type of creator in a field that is popular at the time is thrown in so the author doesn't have to worry about why that person can do whatever, whenever. Whether it's the Great American Author, Hollywood Star/Starlet, Jingle/commercial/song writer and now Influencers. Personally I'm just tired of the trend.

It's not something that I disliked reading, but I was finding myself not wanting to go back with what are to me signs that the story doesn't meet my personal likes. Maybe I will go back to it later, but for now it's a no.
