Ian Kershaw: HITLER 1889 - 1936 (Hardcover, 1998, Allen Lane) 5 stars

Ian Kershaw's HITLER allows us to come closer than ever before to a serious understanding …

Detailed and accessible

5 stars

A magisterial first volume covering Hitler's early years and rise to power. Whilst Kershaw doesn't draw any parallels with other dictators, demagogues and populists, you can clearly see the playbook used by Hitler's successors.

Although eminently readable without them, the endnotes are staggeringly detailed, taking up roughly 25% of the length of the book.
