Folk science correspondence, written by the ignorant to the knowledgeable

No rating

This is certainly my least favorite book to come from the Museum of Jurassic Technology. I suppose there may be some value in looking at folk perceptions of scientific endeavors, but many of the letters here are nothing other than gobbledygook written by pompous, ignorant asses who are angry that scientists get more attention than they do. Even at their best, letters from kooks are a tough read -- they tend to be long-winded, monotonous, and incoherent -- and while there are a few charming letters collected here, they are outweighed by missives from egotistical, logorrheic bumpkins. There are good exhibits at the MJT that extol the virtues of folk knowledge, but this exhibit and book come perilously close to punching down for humorous effect.

I enjoyed the ViewMaster reel (which is sold separately by the museum) a whole lot more than the book.
