I really enjoyed this book, but I'm not sure it's as good as the first one. I should read the first one again to make a decision.

First, I am surprised by the number of times this book made me laugh out loud. Seriously, it isn't a funny book, but some of the character interactions and one-liners are gold.

The structure of this novel is pretty engaging in itself: the two main characters narrate alternating chapters and as they get separated for a while, their points of view allow us to see two parts of the story without an omniscient narrator. The author does a great job of creating unique voices for Jane and Katherine. While they are friends in this book, they are very different people, and this comes through not only in what they say but how they say it.

The first part of the book felt like a missing chapter from Dread Nation. Everything just continued from where they left off. The time jump between the two parts helps to build some mystery, and it offered a way to expose and explain Jane's radical character development. That said, the second part drags a bit.

I liked this book from the first sentence through the last. I found the ending to be both expected and satisfying, plus it allows for future books while closing this chapter of their lives.
