Ride Theory reviewed Jack Kirby by Tom Scioli
Stan Lee does not come off well
4 stars
Warning: if you're a Stan Lee fan, you might want to avoid this. Lee comes off as a huge phony and a huckster. No matter whose version of the Kirby/Lee story you believe (and I'm a true-blue Kirby man) you'll have to admit Kirby got royally screwed. As did Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Batman co-creator Bill Finger, Uncle Scrooge McDuck creator Carl Barks... but arguably, Kirby created many, many more characters, any one of which should have made him a multi-millionaire.
I have no idea why Scioli decided to draw Kirby differently from everyone else in the story -- anime style eyes, with an out-of-proportion head like a Thunderbirds puppet. The childlike proportions look increasingly strange as Kirby ages. It didn't hamper my enjoyment, but it sure is odd.
