Seth: Palookaville #20 (Hardcover, 2010, Drawn and Quarterly) 4 stars

Four Stars, even if some of the material is not for me.

4 stars

This was the first issue of the comic Palookaville to be published as a hardback book, and it's a mixed bag. I'm indifferent to the long-running "Clyde Fans" graphic novel that starts this book; which is technically very well done, but it doesn't appeal to me the way some of Seth's work does. I found the self-loathing autobiographical comic at the end pretty tedious. However, the middle third (roughly) of this issue really grabbed me. It's dedicated to full-color photos of Seth's remarkable cardboard models of his imaginary Canadian city, Dominion. He started building them to flesh out the background of some planned comics but the project took on a life of its own, eventually resulting in several gallery shows. He has a real eye for everyday, North American urban architecture, and his world-building skills are top-notch.

Seth's sketchbook drawings are also very good -- he's able to capture characters with just a few broad brushstrokes.

Four stars, because the best material in here is so very good.
