Dylan Ferrero: Wild Man from Borneo (EBook, 2017) 4 stars

A wild ride through the jungles of Borneo and the exploits of American Peace Corps …

Interesting autobiography of a Peace Corps tour

4 stars

An interesting account of a Peace Corps tour during the 1960's. I found it though Dylan's connection to Kinky Friedman.

Unfortunately the formatting of the ebook was very bad but the book was interesting enough to keep going.

Clifford D. Simak: Destiny Doll (1971, G. P. Putnam's Sons) 3 stars

The Planet beckoned them from space—and closed 'round them like a Venus fly trap!

Captain …

Good story but the main character was too abrasive for me

3 stars

An interesting plot and characters overall. However the main character's air of superiority and attitude towards the female lead character through most of the book kept pulling me out of the tale. The character was deliberately written that way and does eventually change a little bit it was very distracting for me.

Greg Egan: Phoresis and Other Journeys (2023, Egan, Greg) 5 stars

Phoresis and Other Journeys contains three novellas from Hugo Award-winning author Greg Egan.

• “The …

Three great novellas by Greg Egan

5 stars

All three novellas are very good.

“The Four Thousand, the Eight Hundred” explores a civil war on an asteroid colony generations after the colony was founded.

“Dispersion” is about a planet inhabited by six groups that are cyclically intangible and invisible to each other. Then a new disease spreads among all six groups and the race is on to find the cause and a cure. Very good descriptions of how the six groups cyclically are able to interact.

“Phoresis” tells of two tidally locked planets where one is slowly becoming uninhabitable. Interesting and courageous folks explore possible solutions and work to make them happen.

M V Melcer: Refractions (Paperback, 2023, Storm Publishing) 5 stars

This one has me staying up late reading

5 stars

A very well done story exploring social identity, reckoning with past mistakes, coming to forgive yourself and others for mistakes. All wrapped up in an engaging story to unravel the mystery behind a failed space colony.

Be warned that christianity is part of some of the social identity story line. It came on a little strong at first and had me wondering if this was a book with a hidden proselytizing agenda. Thankfully that was not the case.
