Earlier today I finished reading Nemesis Games by James S.A. Corey. Nemesis Games is book five of the Expanse series. It is a space opera set in our solar system a couple hundred years in the future. The Expanse focuses on the adventures of the crew of the Rocinante as they deal with events that change the balance of power between Earth, Mars, and the Outer Planets. The fifth entry mixes up the formula a bit by splitting the party and having them each handle their own affairs dealing with their pasts and what led them together against a backdrop of events that put the past firmly and irretrievably in the past.

Going forward, I will be discussing the events of the book in discussing why I liked it, so be forewarned that there will be spoilers.

This one was... different. And I'm not sure if I liked that. It showed an extremely different side of everything, and even put on hold most of the plotlines that had been developing in the first four books.

It was probably my least favorite to read, but definitely the most intriguing from the perspective of the overall storyline; it feels like the authors took a book to step back and set a few things right before they moved on into the later books (which I have not, as of writing this review, read yet) so they can make sure to get things right later, and I like that.

ALSO there are some wonderful all-new plotlines and characters thrown in now that make me excited to see what's coming next. So yeah, different, but it has a lot of potential, depending on how the later books progress.

Launches back into the "space opera" setting nicely. The idea behind the crew of the Rocinante being separated from each other works nicely for the character development arcs.

It also is much grander in scope compared to the last book, and I rushed through this one (compared to the months I spent over the last book).

If you've gotten as far as book #3, stick with it (and maybe just read the summary for #4) and hop on - the ride gets crazy here.

I haven't done one of these for a while. I thought that the Expanse series was dipping a little after the last one but I must say this is a stunning return to form. This zipped along nicely and fairly moved the plot along. Even the Holden parts didn't feel so draggy. Thoroughly recommended.
