When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown's sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf (Bigby Wolf), to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

[guessing at the star rating / mining my old FB notes now that they are almost impossible to find]

These are the first 10 comics (of a very popular series) bundled into book form, but my impression was only so-so. perhaps it's the date of publication (10 years ago) or that i've seen plenty of coy and/or humorous treatments of the well-known fairy tales, but i found the plots predictable and lifeless. the sisters grimm, in particular, is an excellent series for the junior fiction crowd that is much more charming than this series. and it has the added bonus of NOT containing so much violence and sex. most of the actual gore was superfluous to the story; it felt like it was meant to titillate and shock the people sitting next to the reader. i'd rather an author play to me.
