Inspira rakonto por adoleskantoj

4 stars

Yep, that's me finally getting round to this. I can safely say that this book delivers on all the praise that has been piled on it. First published in 2008, this still feels fresh and relevant now.
On the paper copy I bought (I prefer paper for Doctorow and a select few others) the tagline reads "novel of youthful rebellion". That really got my goat because this isn't a novel about rebellion. This kid just wanted to live his life as he always had. 17 and vanished to a government blacksite. Doing something about that is not "rebellion", it's being a good citizen!
The book also serves as a good primer to security and IT Security primarily. Given this is my professional field I can safely say it is spot on there, despite being 12 years old. It engages on the subject and gently teaches as part of the story …

you MUST get this book -

think about the chaos of the G20 protest this past summer, think about the new species of nationalism/patriotism that grew out of 9-11, think about the guantanamo bay detention camp... this audiobook was immediate, pressing, and hard to put down.

i think it's categorized as sci-fi or futuristic - the school textbooks are actually laptops that switch to that courses content (and, no surprise, they are sponsored by companies), and other technology driven differeces - but it was so relevant to TODAY.

on top of all that - the book made me want to get deeper into computers, to understand them more, to get my hands dirty - so to speak. we use this technology everyday and we're giving so much more away than we realize. this IS the future, and we need to get ready for it.

Though this book is aimed at young adults, I don't feel that it is appropriate for them due to the very adult subject matter scattered throughout (sex, etc). This is unfortunate as the author could have done without the those bits and not have taken anything away from the plot. Otherwise, much of the paranoia and "kid beating the system" themes would have been fascinating to me when I was a youth. Unfortunately, as an adult, much of that looks like exaggerated silliness (which would still be great if it had been better thought out). I would say this book would be mildly amusing for an adult, and totally inappropriate for a kid. Too bad.
