Another gigantic, almost overpoweringly complicated book. I must confess that, for the first time since I began reading this fabulous series, I found myself wishing I'd taken comprehensive notes! But I suppose what was best for me was just to let it flow, enjoy the progression. There were some poignant, powerful moments - spine-tingling in their efficacy and worrying in the impact that they had on my psyche.

Poor Donelson comes in for more than her fair share of pain in this one, and yet I still found myself hoping things between her and Thorne would keep ticking over - when they were both happy and playful they could take on the world.

But of course, the world's kicking the shit out of each other at the moment: “Negative, Green-Leader… negative… Approaching aircraft are not Luftwaffe…”, what a scary transmission! But to be aboard the Kormoran, flying that Lightning II, …

“What do you mean, they will not fly…?” The question was screamed with a volume and intensity that belied the Reichsmarschall’s advanced years and gave a clear indication that the man was a long way from being ready to retire. “We stand here at the cusp of handing the Verdammt English their greatest and most comprehensive defeat since the fall of Britain itself, and you’re telling me that my fucking Luftwaffe will not take off?”

There's no denying that this work opens in a bleak, ravished world. Yet hope is alive and everyone has moved on from where we left them, and the great war machine continues to grind out equipment and grind up personnel with astonishing rapidity and devistation. Our heroes, no longer trying to hold fast in Scotland, are spread around the world; and Britain, or chillingly now the Reich-Protektorat Grossbritannien, is shivering beneath the "jackboot of racism …

Despite a few strange things (the lack of sex, for one, at this age) I found this very compelling and interesting. I’ll enjoy seeing what happens next with these factions and powers, and although there was a sense of fanficism about the book it was still an engaging and well-written work.
