I'm usually not a big fan of (auto)biographies of successful business owners, which usually consists of telling how good your company was and telling others to do exactly the same. This book is different though. You don't get any advice. You just learn about the history of Nike. It's written for normal people that are curious about the company, not for entrepreneurs seeking for inspiration.

Steven Pinker: Enlightenment Now (Hardcover, 2018, Viking, an imprint of Penguin Random House LLC) 3 stars

Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist Steven …

He makes a good point, but he writes it in a quite intelligent manner that is too learned for me and not accessible enough. For instance he throws around with dozens of -isms and expects you to know what they are, or dozens of philosophers and expects you to know their viewpoint.
The majority of the book however, part 2 where he gives a shitload of examples of the progress that humankind has made the past two centuries, does not have this flaw however. It's insightful and easy to read. That alone makes this book worth reading.

Too complex. It might be my puny brain, but I couldn't make anything out of the story. It wasn't working towards some plot, and there were no indications of which magic was allowed in the book.

Very original. Sometimes hard to read due to the language. Also, some chapters that are not so important drag on for too long. The action itself is only a few pages.

Susan Cain: Quiet (2013, Crown) 4 stars

A lot of examples and anecdotes, which makes you think twice about the power of introversion. Even though they are factual, they are told with a lot of emotion. It's not a book about how to live as an introvert, but more a book to make your realize once more it's alright to be an introvert. The only eye opening chapter was the one openly arguing against more teamwork.

Karla McLaren: The Language of Emotions (AudiobookFormat, 2010, Sounds True) 3 stars

Review of 'The Language of Emotions' on 'Goodreads'

I started this book after reading The Art of Empathy, a later book by Karla McLaren. The Language of Emotions has some new insights for me, like the different intelligences within you (body, intelligence, emotion and spirit) and that it takes all four to make healthy decision. It sometimes felt however that it was written for people with a lot of problems with their emotions, and not for people who can already handle their emotions well (let them flow freely, as she calls it) but want to improve on it. For that purpose, I recommend The Art of Empathy.

Jonathan Fields: How to live a good life (2016) 4 stars

It has some nice ideas about little things you can do to improve your life. It's nothing so spectacular that you never heard it before, but as it is often with these things: it never hurts to repeat them. I love the practicality of this book.

I am working in IT, but not in a corporate environment. On the one hand, I got the feeling that I recognized certain things. On the other hand, I found myself often wondering why I would be listening to somebody else's (fictional) work-related problems in my free time.
